Dortmund chief Michael Zorc reveals special nickname for Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool Premier League title win

Jurgen Klopp has been called the “Muhammad Ali of football” by his former club Borussia Dortmund after leading Liverpool to the Premier League title.

The 30-year wait for a league title was finally ended on Thursday night as Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea confirmed the Reds as champions.

Already adored by Liverpool fans, the title win assures Klopp of legendary status at Anfield, having completed the mission he set when he was unveiled as manager back in 2015.

The German of course made the move to Merseyside after seven successful years at Dortmund, having started his managerial career at Mainz.

His exploits have not been forgotten at the Westfallenstadion, where he guided Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles, and broke Bayern Munich’s domination in the process.

And having now secured his first Premier League title, Klopp’s former club were quick to congratulate him, with sporting director Michael Zorc comparing him to perhaps the most iconic figure in sport.

"Congratulations, Jurgen! You are the greatest!” Zorc said in a statement released by Dortmund on Friday.

“It's not for nothing I've for many years now been calling you the Muhammad Ali of football.”

Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke added: "To be champions in such a strong league with so many top teams and so many match days before the end is just outstanding.

“Jürgen has further developed the pressing system he also created in England. At least since the title win, he ranks among the world's greatest managers

“The BVB family congratulates him wholeheartedly.”
