Dope jeered on by mates thought it would be a good idea to climb on top of his car as police tried to take it

A young man climbed on top of his own car in a bid to try and stop police taking it.

Images of the incident in Ashton-under-Lyne on Monday night show the lad clambering onto the roof of the Vauxhall Astra, as officers stood between the vehicle and a group of around 20 young people.

It is understood the drama unfolded on Burlington Street at around midnight following reports of anti-social behaviour.

The owner's mates were said to be 'unhappy' with the seizure and became 'obstructive', resulting in extra officers being drafted in to handle the crowd.

Residents on the street said they were kept awake by the group, who they claim were shouting and swearing at police.

He said: "The owner of the seized vehicle and a group of males present with him were unhappy with the seizure and obstructive, so further officers were deployed to the scene to ensure the safe removal of the vehicle.

"During this the vehicle owner briefly climbed onto the roof of his vehicle but came down prior to its recovery."

The Vauxhall's owner will have to produce relevant documentation and pay removal and storage fees before being able to reclaim the car.

Insp Derbyshire added: "We are aware of ongoing issues related to anti-social use of vehicles around the Canterbury Street/Clarence Road parking area and are working on longer term solutions to this.

"Last night officers used Police Reform Act powers to warn the driver of a vehicle and later seize it from him on Burlington Street after further issues.

"Our team continue to have positive engagement with local young people, but I am also clear that we will not tolerate those that unfortunately choose to cause disruption and distress to local residents and we will have increased focus on key locations and offenders over the coming weeks."
