Door-to-door testing rolled out due to South African coronavirus variant

Testing is to be carried out door-to-door today after a new variant of coronavirus was discovered in parts of the UK.

Volunteers will carry out the tests on Surrey residents after three cases of a South African variant were discovered in the county. Two cases were discovered in Woking, while another was found in Egham.

A team is now offering PCR tests to around 9,000 people in the Goldsworth Park and St Johns areas of Woking.

Details of how the tests are being carried out are being reported by SurreyLive.

Surrey's public health director Ruth Hutchinson said: "It's really important to say that there is currently no evidence that this variant causes more severe illness, so you don't need to worry."

People over the age of 18 has been encouraged to carry out the PCR swab offered to them.

Residents will then be asked to hand the completed tests back to a volunteer, who will be going door-to-door to pick them up. The samples are being specifically genome sequenced to look for the South African variant.

Door-to-door testing in Egham will follow once the manpower and resources have been put in place after a case of the South African variant was discovered there on Sunday (January 31).

A team coordinated by Surrey Local Resilience Forum (SLRF) will be going door-to-door on Tuesday (February 2) offering PCR tests to around 9,000 people in the Woking areas.
