Doodrock

Doodrock was one of the acts that opened the World Cup in Korea. Six men and two women play all manner of drums, hitting hard and very fast. They also play the scissors, possibly the most eccentric instrument on the fringe this year: big, hand-forged and with a clacking, distinctively tinny sound of their own. The audience seem reluctant to switch allegiance from drum to blade, however.

The scissor act, the cops-and-robbers tap dance and the magician turn Doodrock into a variety fringe show. The daft, playful magician makes a fun job of teaching the audience a simple clapping rhythm to accompany the can-can. But the tap-dancing, jazz and surreal hairdressing moments could be dropped altogether.

The company only really rocks when the drums are out. Then, hair flies and hands blur. Dressed in tight leathers, the performers beat these traditional Korean instruments with youthful energy. Their undoubted skills seem a little reduced by the venue: the theatre's black curtains soak up some of the show's good vibrations.
