Donyell Malen to Arsenal: Buy-back clause, Barcelona make £30m move, Liverpool interest

Donyell Malen will be a name familiar to some Arsenal fans but maybe not to others.

The striker joined the Gunners from Ajax in 2015, playing for two years in the youth teams an impressing with a fine goalscoring record.

He never made it into the first team plans under then manager Arsene Wenger though and he was sold in 2017 to PSV Eindhoven.

He made an impact last season, scoring ten goals in 37 appearances, but he has shot to prominence during this campaign scoring 17 goals in 22 games for PSV.

It has led to reports of a move elsewhere, with Arsenal thought to be monitoring the situation of the player they let go on the chep just two years ago.

The transfer window opens again in little over three weeks' time and Arsenal will face competition from a number of other clubs if they want to re-sign Malen.

Here's what we know so far about the Donyell Malen to Arsenal transfer rumours.

£50m transfer

Arsenal are willing to spend big in a bid to resign the 20-year-old who has 14 goals to his name from just 15 appearances across all competitions this season.

That is according to Tuttosport - via the Sun - who claim it could take as much as £50m for PSV to do business with any interested party.

It should be noted that the Gunners sold the youngster for just £200k a couple of years ago and buying him back would echo similarities of Paul Pogba's return to Manchester United.

However, the north London are set to face strong competition for Malen's signature.

Buy-back clause?

When Arsenal plucked Malen from the Ajax academy in the summer of 2015 there was a considerable amount of hype and expectation surrounding the prospect.

However, he didn't push on as expected at the Emirates and was sold to PSV Eindhoven in 2017.

But after going from strength to strength as well as breaking into the Netherlands squad - scoring on his debut in the 4-2 Euro 2020 qualifying win over Germany at the start of September - there has been one question on Arsenal fans' minds...

...'We got a buyback option on Malen or what?' one fan asked following his stunning five-goal haul last month.

The bad news for that Arsenal fan is that there doesn't appear to be a buyback clause.

New contract

Should PSV decided to cash in on Malen then they will be in a very strong negotiating position having recently extended his contract at the Philips Stadion until 2024.

And it's clear he his highly valued at the club.

"Donyell has made great strides in a short time and it is clear that he has not yet reached his ceiling," PSV technical manager John de Jong told the club's website. "He is fast, skilled and focused.

"That is a combination that you do not often encounter."

Barcelona's January bid

One of many clubs linked with Malen is the reigning champions of Spain.

Barcelona need a replacement for Luiz Suarez and reports in Spain claimed they were ready to launch a January bid for the ex-Arsenal youngster.

Furthermore, the report stated that Ernesto Valverde had sent scouts to watch the 20-year-old in action in each of his games this season and that they have been 'blown away' with his brilliant start to the season.

Things have moved on since then, too, with reports in El Desmarque that Barcelona and Malen's agent Mino Raiola have already been in talks over a possible £30million transfer.

But it's not just the La Liga giants who have Malen on their radar...

Liverpool interest

In September it was reported that Malen could be on his way back to England and the Premier League.

But with Liverpool instead of Arsenal.

Reports claimed that the 20-year-old's form was interesting Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and that the Champions League holders were plotting a move for the ex-Gunners wonderkid.

This rumour came after Malen netted five times against Vitesse and talk of a move to Anfield has gone quiet recently.
