Donyell Malen's transfer route to Liverpool opens up as PSV boss makes move admission

PSV Eindhoven are preparing for the sale of Donyell Malen this summer, with Liverpool still said to be near the front of the queue.

The Dutch forward scored 27 goals in all competitions last season, taking his tally to 55 for the club ever since making his senior debut for them back in early 2018.

Having been on the books at Ajax and Arsenal as a youngster, the 22-year-old seems set to make PSV a huge profit as they accept that their vice-captain's future will be better served elsewhere.

Both Malen and right-back Denzel Dumfries have attracted attention for their displays in the Netherlands' run at Euro 2020, which came to a sudden halt on Sunday when they were beaten by the unfancied Czech Republic.

The Netherlands' exit from the tournament has now ramped up the transfer talk around PSV pair Malen and Dumfries, who scored twice from right-back in the group stages and generally impressed onlookers with his regular raids forward.

Malen started the game in attack in Budapest, but he was left frustrated by the Czech defence as Jaroslav Silhavy's side punished Matthijs de Ligt's clumsy handball and subsequent red card as they went on to win 2-0 thanks to goals from Tomas Holes and Patrik Schick.

Speaking to Dutch media, PSV boss Roger Schmidt now says that he is expecting Malen and Dumfries to depart once the offers come in.

“That’s how it goes in football, especially at PSV, we lose one or two good players every year,” Schmidt told NOS.

“It has been clear to me for some time that Donyell and Denzel are likely to leave.

“Actually last summer, I also took it into account.

“If they do stay, that is great, but we have to prepare ourselves that we will have to play without both next season.”

Malen failed to score at the tournament but did provide assists for Dumfries against Austria and for Memphis Depay against North Macedonia, and his work-rate and ability to play all across the front-line will have seen Jurgen Klopp warm to him as he looks for a new addition to the Reds forward line this summer.

Divock Origi is widely expected to leave having fallen down the pecking order in the past couple of seasons, while Xherdan Shaqiri is believed to be attracting interest from Lazio.

Fringe attacking players such as Harry Wilson and Sheyi Ojo will also leave after both spent last season on loan at Cardiff City.

Defenders Nat Phillips and Neco Williams are also attracting interest as Klopp plots a summer revamp.
