Rafael van der Vaart has urged Donny van de Beek to join Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund over a move to Manchester United or Real Madrid.
Former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar confirmed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's interest in the 23-year-old last month, while MEN Sport reported in January that Van de Beek is under consideration by United.
It's widely expected that the Ajax midfielder will leave the club this summer, with manager Erik ten Hag confirming there is an agreement in place for him to leave Amsterdam.
Manchester United are keen to add creativity in midfield at the end of the season with Jack Grealish their preferred option after prioritising the Aston Villa captain over James Maddison, who looks set to sign a new contract at Leicester.
However, former Tottenham and Ajax man Van der Vaart believes that a move to the Bundesliga would be the best fit for Van de Beek, as opposed to Real Madrid or Manchester United.
"In my opinion, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund would be great clubs for him," Van der Vaart told Dutch newspaper Trouw.
"If Real knocks, what should you wait for? If the club really wants you, it will get you too.
"Many people advise him to stay with Ajax for another year and play a good European Championship with the national team. None of them understands how difficult it is to turn down a club like Real Madrid.
"The only thing that counts in Spain is winning a title. That brings a lot of pressure and you also need a bit of luck.
"We also thought that Frenkie de Jong was perfect for Barcelona, and at the moment it doesn't look that way anymore."
