Donny van de Beek sent Manchester United transfer message as his loan exit nears

Dimitar Berbatov has urged Donny van de Beek and Jesse Lingard to put themselves first and leave Manchester United at the earliest opportunity.

As the clock ticks towards Monday's 11pm deadline, van de Beek is gearing up for a loan switch after terms were provisionally agreed with three clubs in the market for his services - including Crystal Palace.

The 24-year-old has not started in the Premier League this season and remains 'upset' about his situation.

As for Lingard, meanwhile, the England forward saw a potential move to Newcastle break down over a financial package and, as things stand, he will remain at Old Trafford until the end of his contract this summer.

One senior player who has sealed a loan transfer away from United this month, though, is Anthony Martial.

He has signed for La Liga title challengers Sevilla after a previous approach for him was knocked back.

Speaking in his role as a Betfair ambassador, former United striker Berbatov said: "It's best for him [van de Beek] to follow Anthony Martial and leave to club to go and play elsewhere.

"He's never established himself as a first-choice player, which is a shame because he produced great performances for Ajax. He should go on a permanent move and try to get back into the form that he was in before.

"It's unfortunate and this is what happens when you panic buy players. It's not good for anyone, as you spend a lot of money then the players don't play."

Berbatov added: "I was surprised that he [Lingard] didn't stay at West Ham and they didn't find a solution, because he did so well there and I don't know why he's choosing to stay United if he's not going play.

"He needs to find a solution quickly. Sometimes it's easier said than done and I've been in the same situation, but he has to find a solution for his own good."

Berbatov continued: "I'm sad to see Martial leave United, but in a way I'm happy for him because he needed to go and he needs to play more minutes. Hopefully he will get that with Sevilla and he show his full arsenal of quality in the Spanish league.

"He's 26, not even at his peak yet. It's a massive opportunity for him to get his career back on track."
