Donny van de Beek's reaction to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer snub vs Villarreal was unwarranted

Where has Donny van de Beek got this sense that he deserves to play and sometimes even start in every game?

Is it from the fans who have constantly called for him to get game time, or were assurances made to the player that has since been broken by his manager?

The true nature of the situation with Van de Beek at Manchester United is still unclear, and it is likely we won't know for certain until the player leaves the club, but it seems that the player is unhappy with his current situation.

Video footage was caught last night of Van de Beek's reaction where he seemed to throw his chewing gum down to the ground in disgust at not being substituted on.

Now more and more recently we have seen the camera's catch over-the-top reactions of footballers to their manager's decisions, but this seems to be the culmination of many weeks of frustration from Van de Beek.

But how have we got to this? Many fans will say well it's simply because Solskjaer has not played the Dutchman despite him deserving a chance to start.

I honestly don't get the fan clamouring for Van de Beek, I was at the game against Villarreal and I saw a fan with a sign that simply said 'Start Donny'.

It seems that Van de Beek has benefitted from the age-old theory that when a team is playing badly, the best player is obviously the one that's not on the pitch. But there is obviously a reason that Solskjaer has decided not to trust him.

He has been fine in the appearances he has made, but no better than the other options United have and it's not like he was a player who was good before Solskjaer joined and was unceremoniously dropped, the manager signed him and the player and Solskjaer's comments at the time seem to say he would be a number 10, assuming in rotation with Fernandes.

Van de Beek said in his interview with Rio Ferdinand on the ex-player's podcast just last month; "I like to play at 8 or 6, it’s fine. They know me because in Ajax I was playing number 10 a lot – but yeah, I can also play as a number 8 or 6"

But to put it simply, Van de Beek can't play those positions for a team like United. He is a number 10, that is his best position. He has played his best football in the Ajax system of total football.

And when you're a player in a system trying to get into a team where the current system is to play it through Bruno Fernandes, who makes everything tick for United currently. you're not going to have much luck.

To be fair to Van de Beek, I think he has realised this and that is why he is trying to make a claim to play deeper and has seemingly spent time over the summer improving his strength and conditioning to compete with United's other options.

But he doesn't offer the defensive qualities of Fred, Scott McTominay or Nemanja Matic, nor does he have the passing range of Paul Pogba.

And all in all, a fixture against Villarreal is not the time to get overly experimental and Solskjaer instead decided to try out McTominay as a lone number six underpinning Pogba and Fernandes, which is another thing that fans have been asking for.

But besides all that. we are in October. There is so much football left to play this season and in the case of last night, he was never going to substitute Fernandes when United needed a goal, nor was he going to come on ahead of Solskjaer's other substitutes.

All in all, it was a massive overreaction from the player and yes he was seen celebrating with the team after their dramatic last-minute winner, but it seems that the situation has already become bitter at United and unfortunately he has fallen victim to the ever-watching nature of the tv cameras.

You hope that the player and Solskjaer will find some common ground eventually and they will find a role for Van de Beek as he is obviously a talented midfielder, but the player needs to understand that won't happen overnight with a squad as stacked as United's.

But as the days go by, that seems less and less likely.
