Donny van de Beek out of Euro 2020 as Man Utd misfit's nightmare season gets worse

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has been ruled out of Euro 2020 through injury as his rotten luck continues this season.

A statement from the team's official website read: "Donny van de Beek misses EURO 2020. Van de Beek has to let the European Championship pass by.

"The midfielder is struggling with an injury. As a result, he is not available in time for EURO 2020.

"Frank de Boer will not call a replacement for Van de Beek. Get well soon, Donny!"

The news comes just one day after the 24-year-old was spotted training separately from the main group, with Matthijs de Ligt - who is also carrying an injury.

Van de Beek was not included in the Netherlands squad for their pre-tournament friendly against Georgia on Sunday, but was named on the bench in the 2-2 draw with Scotland before that.

It's yet another blow for the former Ajax midfielder whose game time has been scarce at United since sealing a £40million move last summer.

In Bruno Fernandes' shadow, the Dutch international has found game time hard to come by - registering only 511 minutes of playing time in the Premier League.

Van de Beek failed to get off the bench altogether in United's Europa League final defeat to Villarreal, with Solskjaer instead turning to Fred in extra-time.

His lack of playing time has led to serious doubts over his future at the club and crunch talks are set to be held between Solskjaer and Van de Beek this summer.

The United boss has constantly backed his decisions and claimed Van de Beek will get more playing time, but that has yet to become a reality.

Following the international break in April, Solskjaer said: “He scored some absolute crackers in training this morning!

“Sometimes, it’s natural that if you don’t play, you have injuries, you lose a bit of confidence, that spark.

“You go away with your national team… I can talk from my own experience. Sometimes I went away to play with Norway and came back, just to get the feel about yourself back and feel better.

“He’s come back and, in training this morning, he scored some absolute top, top goals that I’d be really proud of myself.

“It’s done him the world of good going away, scoring a goal for Holland.

“We hope we can see a lot of that for the next seven or eight weeks of the season and then to kick on again.”

However, any plans to kick on or indeed regain confidence with his international team have now been scuppered.
