Donny van de Beek open to Manchester United position change

Donny van de Beek would be happy to play on the left wing if asked to do so by Manchester United this season.

The Dutch midfielder moved to United from Ajax in the summer transfer window but is yet to start for his new side in the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer previously hinted the 23-year-old might feature on the left wing at some point this season and MEN Sport understands Van de Beek would be open to a temporary position switch.

Sources close to the player reiterated to the MEN Van de Beek 'will play wherever the coach needs him', with the summer recruit understanding the greater needs of team ahead of his own preferences.

Van de Beek is also set to be placed on a specialist strength training programme at Old Trafford to help his muscle growth in order to be better suited to the physicality of top-flight English football.

The former Ajax man could make his first league start for United this weekend when they travel to face Newcastle on Saturday night, with Paul Pogba's starting role in doubt due to his recent poor form.

Solskjaer has also toyed with the idea of playing Van de Beek on the left side of the attack with new summer signing Alex Telles able to offer width with his overlapping runs.

Speaking at the start of the season Solskjaer hailed the Dutch midfielder's tactical flexibility and hinted he could feature in a wide role if required.

"He’s got very high footballing intelligence and tactically he’s gone through the Ajax system. Dutch football is tactical, he knows football, he's got his head screwed on," Solskjaer said after victory against Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

"He’s a different type of left-sided player compared to Dan James and Marcus Rashford but coming inside and finding good pockets why not, he can play loads of different positions, which sometimes is a strength for a player.

"I remember myself sometimes, right-wing, left-wing centre forward, No. 10, Donny is one the coach will always look to have in a squad."
