Donny van de Beek issued warning over Man Utd transfer by Robin van Persie

Robin van Persie has warned Donny van de Beek over "mentally adjusting" to the pressures of playing for Manchester United.

The Ajax midfielder is on the brink of signing in a £40million move after the Premier League giants made a breakthrough in negotiations over the weekend.

It is seen as a major coup for the Red Devils, with the 23-year-old ace expected to sign a five-year deal after previously being linked with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Van Persie knows all about playing for United, having played an influential role in the 2012/13 Premier League title triumph during Sir Alex Ferguson's final season as manager.

And while the Dutchman is delighted to see his compatriot make a big-money move to his old stomping ground, he has warned him about pressures of playing for the Premier League giants.

"Donny van de Beek is 23-years-old and that is a nice age to make a transfer to the Premier League," Van Persie wrote in his column for De Telegraaf.

"I was a bit younger when I went to Arsenal, and in the locker room, I was considered a player for the future.

"Winning the UEFA Cup with Feyenoord meant nothing. The Premier League is a completely different world.

"Donny will be brought in as a major purchase from Manchester United, but he will discover that those other 22 players have also been brought in as a 'major purchase'. One had an even bigger transfer than the other.

"It means that he has to stand there right away and he has to mentally adjust to that. Because Manchester United is in every way a beast of a club."

United are expected the confirm the move in the coming days, with Van de Beek agreeing a five-year deal – with the option of an extra 12 months.

He has even told friends in Amsterdam that Solskjaer's determination to sign him was the key factor in his decision.
