Donny van de Beek explains why he connects with Juan Mata at Manchester United

Donny van de Beek says it is a huge honour to play alongside a 'legend' like Manchester United teammate Juan Mata.

The Dutch midfielder has struck up a good understanding with Mata since he joined the club from Ajax in the summer transfer window.

Mata and Van de Beek were both brought into the United line up for the Carabao Cup victory over Brighton on Wednesday night with the creative duo playing crucial roles in the 3-0 win.

The Spanish midfielder set-up Scott McTominay for the opening goal of the game, while Van de Beek was then the provider as he assisted Mata for United's second.

Paul Pogba sealed the victory with his deflected free-kick late into the game and after the match Van de Beek took the time to praise his new teammate.

"I am really happy to play with players like Juan," the Dutch international told MUTV. "He is so creative and (gives) amazing passes.

"He can play one touch which is also what I like and I think we have a good combination on the pitch. I am happy to play with a legend like Juan."

Van de Beek received plenty of praise for his clever assist to set up Mata for the second goal of the match, but the 23-year-old again hailed his teammate for his own clever movement in the build-up.

He added: "It was a good ball from Fred to me, he played a strong pass. I took the one touch to Juan because I see him already making the movement and it was a great finish. A good goal from us."
