Manchester United could be signing the next Frank Lampard in Donny van de Beek according to a former Ajax and Chelsea star.
The Reds are expected to wrap up a deal for the midfielder worth up to £40.1m, their first signing of the summer.
And former Denmark international Jesper Gronkjaer has compared him to Chelsea legend turned manager Lampard, which would bring an interesting new dimension to the United midfield.
"I wouldn’t be surprised to see him at Real Madrid or Barcelona but I would rather see him at a club just below that," the Dane once told Goal, via The Mirror.
"For his style of play alone, clubs like Tottenham or Chelsea would be a better fit.
"They are still top clubs and he is more like Frank Lampard, that kind of player.
"He is a big guy, box-to-box and takes good long shots, but he is not as technically gifted as other players that have come from Ajax.
"He is a player you can always get a certain level from."
Van de Beek has netted 28 goals in 118 league appearances from midfield for Ajax.
That return has won him 10 Netherlands caps at the age of 23 and, it seems, a move to Manchester United.
