Donny van de Beek accused of "thinking he's a big boy" for joining Manchester United

Dutch legend Marco van Basten believes Donny van de Beek has been given a reality check at Manchester United.

The 24-year-old has only started two Premier League matches this season and has struggled for game time since his £40million summer switch.

Van de Beek has been largely used in cup competitions, though those appearances have been sparse since the turn of the year too.

The Dutch international was highly sought after in the summer but his difficulties adapting to life at Old Trafford have prompted Van Basten to accuse Van de Beek of taking Ajax and the Eredivisie for granted.

“It just shows what a great life they have when they play at Ajax," Van Basten told Ziggo Sport. “They all think very quickly that they are a big boy here and can make it in other countries, but in the Netherlands, there is a nice competition.

“In a team like Ajax you are really helped, especially in the No.10 position. Then you often see that they go abroad and it is a different story.”

He added: “You have to be able to take care of yourself. If you go to a club in another country, you have to be able to present yourself in that team in a way that the others will think: he is one of us and with him we are going to win."
