Donna Air calls for David Lloyd gym in Newcastle to open car park to NHS staff

Geordie actress Donna Air has called for a well known Newcastle gym to open its car park to NHS staff working at a nearby hospital.

Donna, who first shot to fame on Byker Grove in the early 90s and was back on screen recently in hit BBC drama The Split, took to Twitter on Monday, as many NHS workers continued to help the frontline fight against coronavirus in the UK.

And the 40-year-old focused her attention on David Lloyd Gyms, a chain with branches across the UK, whose Newcastle branch is near to the Freeman Hospital in High Heaton. She posted: "Dear @DavidLloydUK in Newcastle . I believe you have a club with car park space right next to main hospital .

"Can you kindly considered opening this up for NHS staff as matter of urgency if safe to do so, whilst your clubs are closed? Many thanks Donna"

Taking things further, Donna then appealed on other businesses to do the same, tweeting: "Perhaps any local business with parking near their local hospitals could contact them to offer extra spaces?" before addressing the Freeman Hospital issue again by adding: "I don’t know the facts but I hear staff are struggling to park and it seems to make perfect sense."

Donna's tweets sparked a big reaction from hard working NHS staff and their friends and families. One reacted: "Would be great if Newcastle council could open their car parks up too!" and another posted: "Definitley think @nufc should be all over this, short distance to rvi hospital aswell."

Her David Lloyd-specific request looks like getting somewhere as the gym chain's account contacted her to get in touch with the Newcastle gym's general manager.

David Lloyd have just launched a number of home workout challenges after people across the country have been urged to stay home wherever possible.
