Donegall Pass community saves Halloween after event cancelled at last minute

A South Belfast community has rallied together to create a Halloween event for their kids - after the original event was cancelled at the last minute.

Residents and businesses in Donegall Pass have clubbed together to raise enough money to hold a party at the community centre tonight.

A trip that was planned had fallen through late on Wednesday.

Resident Peter Moore told Belfast Live that he was concerned about where local kids could go on Thursday night so decided to do something about it.

He said: “We thought if we could get the hall open then we could try and raise a bit of money and do it that way.

“A couple of us got together and went door-to-door around Donegall Pass and the wider area. We just said that it was for the local community if there was anything they could offer.

“Some gave £5 or £10, shops gave sweets and crisps - it was great to see.

“Then, DUP Councillor Tracy Kelly was able to get the community centre open for us between 6pm and 8pm. We have lights and music and we’re going to sort prizes and games for the kids too. You don’t always see communities coming together like this so it’s brilliant to see.”

Councillor Kelly said that the work proved what can be achieved by a community in a short space of time.

She told Belfast Live: “I was contacted this morning because an event was cancelled at the last minute.

“I believe residents only found out last night and they were concerned about what they were going to do for Halloween.

“We didn’t have much time but they said that if they could get the food and things sorted could we get the community centre open.

“The council agreed to do that and a lot of the shops and businesses donated to help the community.

“It showed how quickly the community can achieve in a short space of time. It’s brilliant to see and I hope that everyone has a great night.”

The event takes place from 6pm to 8pm.

Those who donated to the event were: Tesco Express, Dublin Road, Spar Botanic, Harrison healthcare, Mail Boxes, Falafel Cuisine, Flour Power, The Rubber Stamp Co, Sakura House, the resident at 56 Donegall Pass, Paragon Fabrics, Espresso Works, South Beach Tanning, South Belfast Young Conquerors and other local residents.
