Donegal hostel's brilliant gesture ahead of funeral for Arranmore pier tragedy victim

A local hostel is offering free beds for mourners attending the wake and funeral of man tragically killed after his car slid off a pier.

Popular Lee Early, 26, died after his car hit the water off the coast of remote Co Donegal island Arranmore.

Another man, in his 30s, miraculously escaped from the vehicle after it plunged into the sea at around 5am on Sunday.

The funeral for the tragic RNLI volunteer will take place at 12pm on Tuesday.

And Arranmore Hostel will offer those attending the ceremony a place to stay.

It posted online: "For anyone who may be travelling to Arranmore for the wake and funeral of Lee Early and needs somewhere to stay, there are plenty of beds in the hostel free of charge."

Lee's death has been described as a huge loss to the small island.

RNLI manager Owen Medland, said: "The deceased was one of our volunteers and was very close to us.

"He was a super young man who would be a loss to any community never mind a small community.

“As an organisation, our thoughts are with the family, our volunteer crew who fought valiantly to save the young man’s life, and the wider Arranmore community.

“We would like to assure the community that after what appears was a tragic accident, we are maintaining our lifeboat service on the island which is further testimony to the crew in Arranmore.”

Gardai are investigating the tragedy and a full postmortem is due to take place at Letterkenny University Hospital on Monday.
