Donegal boss Declan Bonner confirms Leo McLoone's inter-county retirement

Donegal boss Declan Bonner has confirmed Leo McLoone’s retirement from inter-county football.

McLoone, 30, was part of the county’s All-Ireland winning side in 2012 and won five Ulster titles on top of that.

He had become more peripheral, however, under Bonner and after a lengthy club campaign with Naomh Conaill, who reached the Ulster club final before losing to Kilcoo last month, he has joined Frank McLynn in retirement.

“Leo has been a brilliant servant to Donegal football and the time we’ve been involved he won two more Ulster titles and was a very important part of the panel,” Bonner told Donegal Sport Hub.

“I met him a number of times in early autumn and he was going to see out the club championship with Naomh Conaill. He had a lot of experience and was a born leader but felt the time was right. He’s been there a long time and worked hard the last few years. We wish him well.”

Having started their League campaign with a draw at home to Mayo last Saturday night, Donegal travel to face Meath on Sunday.
