Tottenham Hotspur Announce Joao Palhinha Signing, Loan Details Revealed

João Palhinha officially joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan on Sunday. | X/SpursOfficial

João Palhinha joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan from Bayern Munich this summer, both clubs announced.

As reported by The Athletic, Palhinha was to have a medical in Germany on Friday in preparation of the move. Details of the move, also reported by Florian Plettenberg, include Tottenham covering Palhinha’s wages for the season, an initial €5 million (£4.3 million, $5.7 million) loan fee and a buy option at season’s end of €30 million (£25.9 million, $34.2 million). Plettenberg added Palhinha is looking to make his debut in a friendly against his parent club on Aug. 7 in Germany.

Palhinha initially rose to prominence at Fulham under Marco Silva from 2022 to 2024. The Portuguese midfielder moved to Bayern Munich last summer, but he made just 10 starts in 25 total appearances in Vincent Kompany’s first season in charge. He struggled to make a consistent impact behind Bayern Munich stalwarts Joshua Kimmich and Leon Gortezka.

Palhinha’s strengths lie in behind a defensive midfielder who’s apt at winning the ball. Thomas Frank looks to get the most out of a player who won Fulham’s player of the season award in 2022–23.

Palhinha is the second Bayern Munich player to join Tottenham this summer after the Europa League champions made Mathys Tel’s move to north London permanent after a January loan spell. Also signed this summer was West Ham United star Mohamed Kudus.

The 30-year-old reinforces a defensive midfield group that includes Rodrigo Bentancur, Archie Gray, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sar. Spurs won the Europa League last season salvaging what was otherwise a tumultuous Premier League campaign finishing 17th under Ange Postecoglou. The north London club parted ways with the Australian in the summer hiring highly-regarded Brentford boss Frank to replace him.

Amid incomings are also outgoings as Son Heung-min is set to join Major League Soccer side LAFC.
