Doncaster Rovers reportedly name their price for Sunderland target John Marquis

Doncaster Rovers have reportedly named their price for Sunderland target John Marquis

Sunderland are in the market for a new forward this summer and manager Jack Ross is known to be a fan of Marquis.

The Black Cats had two bids of £1.25million and £2million rejected for Marquis during the January transfer window but a report in The Sun claims Doncaster are now willing to sell the 27-year-old for just £1million.

Rovers boss Grant McCann has admitted he doubts Doncaster will be able to keep hold of Marquis this summer, who has his eye on a Championship move.

QPR and Millwall are among the second tier clubs interested but Sunderland will be hoping they can convince Marquis that they will be able to win promotion this season in order to tempt him to Wearside.

McCann confirmed over the weekend that they have already received two bids for Marquis this summer and admits they will not stand in his way if they receive the right offer.

Doncaster sealed the signing of Sunderland defender Reece James on Wednesday and it may be that the Black Cats' willingness to sell James to Doncaster - and the speed with which a deal was reached - could help them in their pursuit of the prolific striker.

Marquis scored 26 goals last season but he is not the only forward Sunderland have their eye on this summer.

The Black Cats are one of a host of clubs keen on former Ayr United forward Lawrence Shankland. The 23-year-old scored 34 goals in 41 games last season and is available on a free transfer.

Plymouth's Freddie Ladapo is another option. The Pilgrims had accepted two bids for the 26-year-old last week but one of those clubs, Portsmouth, have since pulled out the race.
