Doncaster residents told to evacuate 'immediately' with severe flood warning in place

Doncaster Council has warned residents to evacuate their homes 'immediately' and to seek shelter with family and friends.

The River Don is breaching in two areas at St Oswald Church and Kirk Sandall, with a severe flood warning in place.

The council tweeted: "There is a Severe Flood Warning in place for Sandal Grove, Old Kirk Sandall.

"Residents in these areas are advised to evacuate immediately.

"We advise people to seek shelter with family and friends.

"If you require support ring our emergency helpline 01302 735688

"Rest centres have been established."

The warning was issued shortly after 7am this morning, which classifies the flooding as 'danger to life.'

The Government website says the highest level forecast in the next 36 hours is 6.36m at 2.45pm on Friday, November 8 - which surpasses the level during the 2007 floods.

On June 26, 2007, the level was recorded as 6.30m.

The warning read: "River levels have risen as a result of the persistent heavy rainfall today.

"Consequently, flooding of property and roads across Kirk Bramwith is possible this morning, 08/11/19.

"River levels will remain high until midday on 08/11/19.

"Our incident response staff and Emergency Planners are closely monitoring the situation and our incident room is open.

"This message will be updated in 8 hours, or as the situation changes."

Trains have been diverted from Stainforth to Adwick to Doncaster, with no trains stopping at Kirk Sandall on the Scunthorpe Line.

There are also a number of road closures in place after North Bridge road was closed.

The evacuation warning follows a night of flooding in Sheffield, where shoppers were left stranded in Meadowhall shopping centre.
