Doncaster boss offers an update on potentially signing former Sunderland striker Victor Anichebe

Former Sunderland striker Victor Anichebe has not signed a deal with Doncaster Rovers yet, as he continues to train with them to earn a deal.

Anichebe has been a free agent since leaving Chinese side Beijing Sport University and is desperate to find a new club and resume his career.

Invited to train with the Black Cats' League One promotion rivals by manager Darren Moore, who worked together at West Brom, the 31-year-old is currently trying to prove his fitness.

Doncaster Free Press report that the two parties have already began talking about a package for Anichebe to sign, with clubs still able to sign free agents after the closure of the transfer window.

But Moore insists nothing is done yet.

He told Doncaster Free Press: “It’s a two-way thing in terms of him training. He’s got to like the environment, it could be as well.

"We might need to see him in more games, you’ve got to remember things like that.

“Training is really good to have but games are a different aspect.

“You’ve got to look at all aspects when you’re making a wholesale and concrete decision going forward."

Moore continued: “He’s training with us. We made it quite clear – he’s come back in, after a spell overseas, he's come in.

“I worked with Vic at my previous employers and I know Victor well. He’s just been coming in and having some training and blowing off the cobwebs if you like. It still remains like that.

“If something changes with that we'll keep you well informed and up to speed. At the moment he’s training with us and long may it continue.”

In a recent question and answer session on his Instagram prior to training with Doncaster, the striker revealed he would love a return to Sunderland and joked that Mr. Dell - Michael Dell, who is part of a US consortium buying the Black Cats - should give him a call.
