Doncaster boss confirms they have received bids for Sunderland target John Marquis

Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann has confirmed they have received 'two or three bids' for Sunderland target John Marquis.

The Black Cats have a long held interest in Marquis, for whom they had two bids rejected in January.

The 27-year-old scored 26 goals last term as he helped Rovers reach the League One play-offs and it is believed he will be allowed to leave the Keepmoat Stadium this summer.

Sunderland are known to be in the market for a new forward this summer after both Will Grigg and Charlie Wyke struggled to find the net on a consistent basis.

The Black Cats have been credited with an interest in Plymouth forward Freddie Ladapo while reports in Scotland last week suggested Sunderland had offered former Ayr United forward Lawrence Shankland a contract.

Jack Ross is a big fan of Marquis, though, but it seems as if the forward has his heart set on a move to the Championship.

"If John is here for the first game of the season then great. We'll try to get him among the goals again,” McCann told the Doncaster Free Press.

"If truth be told, John probably doesn't want to be here.

"He feels he deserves a crack at the Championship and so do I to be honest.

"I think to score 26 goals, he deserves the chance at a Championship club and we won't stand in his way.

“We've had nothing for four or five days but there have been two or three bids come in for John.

"There's nothing that meets the club's valuation - nothing anywhere near it.

"The club do not need to sell him.”
