Donation centre set up for people in Bury to help Ukraine war refugees

With the deepening humanitarian crisis following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, people across the country are coming together to help out refugees fleeing violence.

Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have crossed from the Black Sea nation into neighbouring Poland, often with just the belongings they can carry on a day-long walk.

Now, residents across the world are stepping up their charitable efforts to help those in need.

That includes the people of Bury, with a donation drive established in Ramsbottom.

Jayne Billi, posting on Facebook, said volunteers are hoping to see children’s items like soft toys, crayons, colouring books, stationery, and nappies donated.

She is also on the lookout for blankets, towels, hygiene products, sanitary products, toothbrushes, clothing, first aid, and sleeping bags.

“Everything starts small,” Ms Billi said in her post. “Domestic Maiden Cleaning Company staff and friends with Joanna Norris, Chloe Marie, and Heather Walker, are starting to get packages of aid together for Ukraine.

“[We are] desperate for hats, gloves, [and] scarves, for adults and children please, and any empty cardboard boxes we could use for transportation.

“The truck leaves the polish centre in bury on Thursday so we have till Wednesday night.”

Donations can be left at Ramsbottom Cricket Club from 10:30am to 8pm on Tuesday (March 1) and Wednesday (March 2).
