Donating blood remains 'essential' - NHS bosses urge people to donate as normal amid coronavirus crisis

Blood donors are being urged to carry on donating ‘as normal’ to support the NHS in its fight against coronavirus.

Bosses at NHS Blood and Transplant say blood donation remains ‘essential’, and says people should attend their appointments as usual.

A spokesperson said blood stocks remain at a ‘good’ level, and that they were closely monitoring guidance from the government.

“Travel to blood donation sessions is essential,” an NHS Blood and Transplant spokesperson said.

“Our stock levels are currently good. However we need donors to keep donating as normal and to follow the health, hygiene and travel advice.

“Donation will help keep stocks healthy so we are well prepared for the impact of the coronavirus.

“We’re regularly reviewing the situation and working closely with the DHSC, PHE, and the UK’s other blood donation services.  We're putting in place extra safety measures and safety is always our number one priority.”

The service said there had been no confirmed cases of any form of coronavirus being passed on through the donation of blood, organs, tissues and stem cells.

People who have travelled to and via the Government’s list of affected countries cannot give blood.

The list includes Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Italy, Iran, Japan, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
