Donald Trump 'won't have long one-to-one' with May on UK visit, suggests Hunt

Jeremy Hunt today suggested Theresa May won't sit down for a long one-to-one meeting with Donald Trump during his visit to Downing Street.

But Number 10 say a bilateral meeting with the two leaders is still on.

The outgoing Prime Minister was widely expected to sit down for a bilateral meeting with the US President following his arrival at Number 10 tomorrow - and ahead of a joint press conference by the two leaders.

It follows reports that President Trump is more interested in the next Prime Minister than lame-duck Mrs May.

Mr Hunt told the BBC: “He will certainly be having a series of meetings with the UK government.”

Pressed on whether he would sit down one-to-one with the Prime Minister, Mr Hunt said: “He’s going to sit down with Theresa May in a meeting which I will be at, and he may well sit down with her one to one, as often happens before or after that.

“We will be talking about the things we want to work together on.”

The BBC’s US Editor Jon Sopel said this morning that a bilateral meeting with Mrs May had originally been on the schedule for Tuesday, but had disappeared in a recent revision.

He said: “This may be an issue of drafting on the schedule - and maybe we read too much into this - but the schedule originally had a bilateral with Theresa May and then a news conference.

“But the latest version I’ve seen says “Theresa May greets him, and news conference” - suggesting there may not be a bilateral.”

Shortly before boarding Air Force One to travel to London, President Trump again suggested he wanted to meet with Boris Johnson during the trip.

He told reporters: “Well, I think I may meet with him. He's been a friend of mine. He's been very nice. I have a very good relationship with him.”
