Donald Trump told Scottish golf trip is 'not essential' in warning from Nicola Sturgeon

Donald Trump has been warned by Nicola Sturgeon against plotting an escape from the White House to play golf in Scotland.

The First Minister said lockdown travel restrictions apply to Trump as much as anyone else, adding that a golf trip is not an "essential purpose".

The outgoing US president is refusing to accept defeat to Joe Biden, fuelling global speculation about what he will do on inauguration day on January 20.

Sturgeon, at her first coronavirus briefing of the year, was asked if she knew whether Trump was planning to visit one of his golf resorts.

"I hope and expect the travel plan he immediately has is to exit the White house - beyond that, I don't know," Sturgeon said.

"We are not allowing people to come into Scotland without an essential purpose right now, and that would apply to him just as it applies to anybody else.

"Coming to play golf is not what I consider to be an essential purpose."

Trump is desperately trying to find a way of staying in the White House despite losing the election to Biden.

He was also caught on tape trying to push public officials in the state of Georgia to overturn his loss by "finding" more votes for him.

US observers believe he will throw another tantrum and dodge Biden's official inauguration in two weeks, perhaps staging a distraction to spoil the occasion.

It was reported at the weekend Prestwick airport, near Trump's Turnberry golf resort has been primed to take a US plan sometimes used by Trump on the day before the official event.
