Donald Trump is set to mingle with sumo wrestlers on his state visit to Japan.

The US president will present a trophy – dubbed the “Trump Cup” – to the winner of a championship match he is scheduled to attend with Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday.

The White House said the trophy is nearly five feet tall and weighs between 60 and 70lb.

While Japanese officials say his presence at the sumo tournament will help promote Japanese culture, they will allow him to break sumo spectators' tradition.

At the Kokugikan arena in Tokyo, Mr Trump is to use a chair instead of sitting Japanese style on a "zabuton" mattress on the floor at "masu seki" box seats reserved for him near the ring.

He may also keep his shoes on and put plastic covers over them, partly due to security reasons.

Hundreds of seats have been set aside for Mr Trump and Mr Abe, while it has been rumoured sales of canned beer may be banned for safety.

Officials will also have to watch out for stray mattresses hitting Mr Trump, as spectators customarily throw them to cheer a wrestler's victory against his senior opponent.

Mr Trump is visiting Japan on a state visit designed to show off the long US-Japan alliance, as well as the close friendship between him and Mr Abe – even as trade tensions run high.
