Donald Trump has congratulated Brazil's new far-right president after he was sworn in, telling him: "The USA is with you."
Jair Bolsonaro was sworn in as Brazil's president on New Year's Day, having won the presidential election in October.
Minutes after Mr Bolsonaro took the oath of office and gave his first speech as president, Mr Trump said: "Congratulations to President @JairBolsonaro who just made a great inauguration speech - the U.S.A. is with you!"
And Mr Bolsonaro responded: "Dear Mr. President @realDonalTrump, I truly appreciate your words of encouragement. Together, under God’s protection, we shall bring prosperity and progress to our people!"
Bolsonaro is a former army captain with hard-right positions. He has often expressed admiration for US president Mr Trump, and says he plans to emulate several of his policies.
The 63-year-old, a longtime congressman, has risen to power on an anti-corruption and pro-gun agenda which energised conservatives and hard-right supporters after four consecutive presidential election wins by the left-leaning Workers' Party.
After taking the oath of office in Congress in Brasilia, Mr Bolsonaro read a short speech that included many of the far-right positions he staked out during the campaign.
He promised to combat the "ideology of gender" teaching in schools, "respect our Judeo-Christian tradition" and "prepare children for the job market, not political militancy".
He said: "I call on all congressmen to help me rescue Brazil from corruption, criminality and ideological submission."
