Donald Trump state visit: UK should 'not be rolling out red carpet' for US president, says mayor Sadiq Khan

London’s mayor has said “it is wrong to be rolling out the red carpet” for Donald Trump during his upcoming visit to the UK.

Sadiq Khan has called on prime minister Theresa May to tell the US president he is “wrong on a whole host of issues” such as his views on women and immigration.

Mr Trump is due to begin his three-day state visit on Monday.

Speaking to the BBC ahead of the president’s arrival, Mr Khan said that while the trip was “right and proper”, he did not believe a full state visit should be given “to somebody whose views we disagree with”.

Mrs May has said the visit will strengthen the “already close relationship” between the US and the UK.

But Mr Khan said the president should not be given special treatment.

"It's right and proper that we've got a good working relationship with out closest allies... it's wrong that the red carpet is rolled out," he said.

The two leaders are embroiled in a long-running feud, which began in May 2016 when Mr Trump challenged the newly elected mayor to an IQ test after Mr Khan said his views on Islam were “ignorant”.

Mr Trump’s state visit is expected to draw thousands of protesters as well as counter-demonstrations throughout the UK.
