Donald Trump sends message to Tiger Woods after he suffers major leg injuries in car crash

Donald Trump has sent a message of support to friend Tiger Woods following his car crash which resulted in serious leg injuries.

The 15-time Major winner had to be "extricated" from his car by firefighters and paramedics in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Woods suffered "open fractures affecting the tibia and fibula bones" in his lower right leg "stabilised by inserting a rod into the tibia".

While injuries to his foot and ankle have been stabilised with screws and pins.

Trump has issued a statement saying: "Get well soon, Tiger. You are a true champion!"

A statement published on Woods' Twitter account said: "He [Woods] is recovering in his hospital room."

Anish Mahajan, the chief medical officer of the Harbor UCLA Medical Centre where Woods was taken for treatment, explained that the open fractures were broken in more than two pieces.

He went on to add: "Trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling."

Woods was "not able to stand under his own power" while a deputy from the LA County Sheriff's Department said he was "fortunate to be alive".

The accident occurred on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes.

LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva stated that Woods' car was possibly going at a "greater speed than normal" but insists there is a "high frequency of accidents" in that area.

He said: "Because it is downhill, it slopes and curves, that area has a high frequency of accidents. It is not uncommon."

Barack Obama, Serena Williams and Mariah Carey are among those to also send messages of support to Woods.

The 45-year-old was in Los Angeles to host last week's Genesis Invitational PGA event and was driving one of the tournament cars when he crashed.

The year's first Major, the Masters, begins in just over six weeks time.
