Donald Trump sends message to Dana White and the UFC ahead of Tony Ferguson vs Justin Gaethje

President Donald Trump commended Dana White and the UFC as the promotion hosted it's first event in almost two months.

UFC 249 is taking place behind closed doors in Jacksonville, Florida, with Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje clashing in the main event.

Speaking in a recorded message shown during the UFC 249 broadcast, President Trump said:  “I want to congratulate Dana White and the UFC, they’re going to have a big match... we need sports... Congratulations to Dana White and UFC.”

Meanwhile, Conor McGregor issued a good luck message to fighters at the event.

UFC 249 is going ahead under new safety protocols to protect fighters from Covid-19.

However, Brazilian fighter Jacare Souza tested positive for the virus and has been ruled out.

McGregor tweeted: "Wishing all my fighting colleagues good health as they put on tonight’s show for us! #UFC249 on ESPN+ Good luck and God speed men and women.

"From the competitors to the cleaners. Thank you all Also Prayers up for Jacare Souza and team in making a full recovery. #UFC249 #ESPN"

Dana White has insisted that the safety of fighters is the UFC's priority and came out with a defiant statement following Souza's positive test.

The UFC president says his organisation is doing all it can to prevent fighters from picking up the virus while putting on a show for fans watching the fights around the world.
