Donald Trump has angrily hit back after his embarrassing gaffe in which he called Apple CEO Tim Cook “Tim Apple”.

The US president rounded on “fake news” reporting of the blunder, claiming he used the name Tim Apple to “save time and words”.

Mr Trump was roundly mocked following the speech last week when, sitting next to Mr Cook, the leader of the free world said: “You’ve really put a big investment in our country, we appreciate it very much Tim Apple.”

After apparently stewing over it for days, Mr Trump tweeted on Monday: “At a recent round table meeting of business executives, & long after formally introducing Tim Cook of Apple, I quickly referred to Tim + Apple as Tim/Apple as an easy way to save time & words.

“The Fake News was disparagingly all over this, & it became yet another bad Trump story!”

Mr Trump and Mr Cook had been speaking at a White House meeting for the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board.

Mr Cook appeared stunned when Mr Trump bestowed this new title, but later embraced it by poking fun at the error in quietly changing his Twitter name to “Tim Apple”.

He used his firm’s Apple logo for his surname after a number of requests from his followers.
