Donald Trump says '99%' of coronavirus cases are harmless - despite death toll surge

Donald Trump claims 99 per cent of coronavirus cases are "totally harmless" - despite the country's death toll surging to nearly 130,000.

More than 2.8million coronavirus cases have been recorded in America but the President says progress is being made.

He spoke at the White House on Independence Day and insisted he was in control.

Many States reported record increases in cases last week but Trump says only a tiny minority of infections are killing people.

He had earlier branded the virus a "terrible plague from China" - and warned Beijing "must be held accountable" for its spread around the globe.

Trump said: "We have now tested almost 40 million people for coronavirus.

"By so doing, we show cases - 99 per cent of which are totally harmless.

"Results that no other country can show because no country has testing that we have, not in terms of the numbers or in terms of the quality."

He added: "China's secrecy, deceptions and cover-up allowed it to spread all over the world - 189 countries.

"China must be held fully accountable.

"We were doing better than any country had ever done in history - and then we got hit with this terrible plague from China.

"Now we're getting close to fighting our way out of it," he added. "We're on the way to a tremendous victory."

American rapper Kanye West has meanwhile said he will run for office.

Taking to Twitter in the midst of 4 July Independence Day celebrations, the self proclaimed genius made clear to all he wanted the country's top job.

He has vowed to take on pal Donald Trump as 2020 took yet another bizarre turn.

Kanye tweeted: “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future.”

He then sensationally added: “I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION.”
