Donald Trump's throwaway remark about Tory Michael Gove is exquisitely awkward

We've all been there.

A serving Tory politician flies across the Atlantic, interviews you for the front page of a national newspaper, and poses with thumbs up in your office.

But you just can't remember who he is.

It seems this unfortunate fate may have befallen Donald Trump - and if so it's exquisitely awkward for the man who interviewed him, Michael Gove.

Before he rejoined the Cabinet, Tory MP Mr Gove interviewed the US President for The Times days ahead of his inauguration in 2017.

The first question of the interview was about Trump and Gove's shared Scottish heritage.

Yet the President was asked about the man who's now running to be Prime Minister in another interview today - and the response was unexpected.

Sunday Times political editor Tim Shipman told him Mr Gove was "coming up on the rails."

The President replied: "Wow, from Wales?"

It suggests one of two things.

Either the President had momentarily forgotten who the possible future Prime Minister was.

Or he's getting a little hard of hearing.

He said Boris Johnson would make an "excellent" Prime Minister (X00157)

Either way, his comment about Mr Gove was well short of the praised he lavished on Boris Johnson, Mr Gove's rival for the Tory leadership.

He said Mr Johnson would make an "excellent" Prime Minister, while also calling for Nigel Farage to be a Brexit negotiator and encouraging the UK to "walk away" in a No Deal Brexit .

Times proprietor Rupert Murdoch reportedly sat in on the entire interview with Mr Gove in 2017, a role that was only revealed weeks later.
