Donald Trump's second impeachment trial for inciting insurrection set to start on Monday

Donald Trump's impeachment trial is set to start on Monday.

The House of Representatives will deliver an impeachment charge against the former president to the Senate on Monday.

This will trigger a trial process in the upper house, where a two-thirds majority will be required to convict Trump of inciting an insurrection following the storming of the US Capitol.

The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives ignored Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's request for a delay.

New Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said: "The House will deliver the article of impeachment to the
Senate.

"The Senate will conduct a trial of the impeachment of Donald Trump. It will be a full trial. It will be a fair trial."

His comments came the morning after Mr McConnell asked the House to wait until next Thursday to send the charges - and to delay the trial until mid-February to give Trump time to prepare a defence.

The Republican added: "This impeachment began with an unprecedentedly fast and minimal process over in the House.

"The sequel cannot be an insufficient Senate process that denies former President Trump his due process or damages the Senate or the presidency itself."

The trial could distract from President Joe Biden's efforts to push an ambitious legislative agenda through Congress, including nearly $2 trillion worth of COVID-19 relief.

Trump last week became the first president in US history to be impeached twice.

He stands accused of urging his supporters to storm the Capitol in an attack that left five dead.

Although Trump is no longer president, he may be barred from holding office in the future.
