Three police officers accompanying Donald Trump's motorcade have been injured in a crash, the White House said.

Officers who were escorting the US President have been rushed to hospital after they were involved in a road traffic accident while driving down Interstate 10 in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Witnesses reported seeing at least two or three officers on the ground after the collision on Tuesday.

The President's limousine was not impacted.

Motorcycle escorts stopped to deal with the accident and those injured, while some of them returned to the motorcade later.

Mr Trump's motorcade then continued on its journey.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told the Evening Standard: "Today, three motorcycle officers from local law enforcement were injured in an accident while travelling with the President’s motorcade. All three are being treated for injuries at a nearby hospital and are in stable condition.”

Journalist Meridith McGraw, who was travelling in the press pool, said she saw "bloodied" officers.

She tweeted: "Here in the press pool on the way to Hackberry with President Trump's motorcade. As reported to the pool, the motorcade slowed because two police bikes appeared to have crashed.

"I saw two officers standing and being tended to with very bloodied arms as we drove by. Asked for update."

It is the President's third trip to Louisiana since he was elected. He was visiting to deliver a speech promoting the country's energy policy.
