Donald Trump is proving to the entire world that maths really isn’t his strong suit. But it’s not just maths he’s bad at, he’s also clearly lacking a great deal of common sense.
The president’s recent comments have further raised alarms over his mental faculties and whether they are actually working as intended. Speaking to reporters on the topic of immigration Trump made the bold claim that “virtually 100% of the net job creation in the last year has gone to migrants.” He then walked back on his words somewhat and told those listening that he actually thought it was “beyond that number of 100%.”

Unreal: Trump claimed “substantially MORE than 100%” of new jobs went to migrants. Not only is that mathematically impossible – it’s another dangerous lie scapegoating immigrants.
This man is unfit, unserious, and obsessed with dividing America.

Now I’m no mathematician, but I’m pretty sure there is no going beyond 100%. If something is 100% then that is the whole thing, you can’t have more than that percentage, it just doesn’t make sense. Think of it like a cake, if you eat 100% of the cake then it’s all gone, you can’t eat 110%.
Donald Trump and numbers just don’t mix
This isn’t the first time Trump has spoken nonsense. In fact, the last time he said something this foolish was literally on Sunday. Trump told reporters that the number of drug deaths in America was 300 million, which is almost the entire population of the country (340 million).
His increasingly nonsensical statements have naturally caused some concern. On X people struggled to make sense of just what the president was trying to say. “Does he mean 1000 jobs went to 1300 immigrants, or 1300 jobs went to 1000 immigrants ?!!” asked one exasperated individual. Another wrote, “I can’t fathom how you take this man seriously but people do.” Meanwhile, a third joked, “Congrats, you passed kindergarten math.”
At this point it’s not even clear if Trump is lying or if he’s just so confused that he actually believes the nonsense he’s spouting. But one thing is for certain: what he is saying is indeed nonsense. We can’t ignore the fact that what Trump’s words simply don’t make sense most of the time. HIs maths is cruddy and his facts are fake, for a man leading the country we should be holding him to a higher standard.
While dunking on Trump is fun, the worrying part is that many of his followers won’t question, or think too hard about, his words. That means he can get away with spreading his divisive rhetoric, and scapegoating migrants yet again, without ever being challenged. While people might fact check him in online spaces we’d like to see reporters calling him out on his antics live. Unfortunately that doesn’t look like it will happen anytime soon.
