Donald Trump’s latest act of retribution is an unbelievably petty one

President Donald Trump has revoked Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris. The decision, which was outlined in a directive to the Department of Homeland Security, ends an extension of her security detail that then-President Joe Biden had granted before he left office.

Under federal law, former vice presidents are usually entitled to six months of Secret Service protection after they leave office. For Harris, that period ended in July. However, before his departure, Biden signed a memorandum that extended her protection for an additional year. Trump’s directive, dated Thursday, cancels that extension, and it will be effective on September 1, 2025.

This decision arrives as Harris prepares to start a national book tour for her new memoir, 107 Days, which details her presidential campaign. According to The Guardian, the tour, which is set to begin shortly, will involve numerous public appearances across the country. This doesn’t seem to be the best time to remove security detail for the former Vice President.

Trump’s next act of revenge puts the former VP in danger’s way

Trump’s directive reads, “You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”

Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Harris, made sure to be professional, saying she was “grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.” However, others have been more critical of the president’s action.

A spokesperson for California Governor Gavin Newsom, who was briefed on the situation, stated, “The safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses.” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, a resident of the city where Harris also lives, called the revocation “another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation in the form of firings, the revocation of security clearances and more. This puts the former vice-president in danger, and I look forward to working with the Governor to make sure Vice-President Harris is safe in Los Angeles.”

The Secret Service’s role includes not only providing agents around the clock but also continuously monitoring for threats and analyzing intelligence. This comprehensive federal layer of security will now be removed, leaving Harris and her team to coordinate private arrangements. This presents a significant change in her security posture, particularly as she plans for a series of high-profile, public-facing events for her book tour. It’s easy to see why agents are quiet quitting.

This is not the first time the current administration has gone after perceived political foes. Since returning to the White House, Trump’s administration has removed security clearances and protection for several individuals, including his former national security adviser, John Bolton, and members of Joe Biden’s family. The decision to strip Harris of her protection stands out for its timing and target, because it’s at a moment of heightened visibility for the former vice president.
