Trump IRS tax leak settlement: A legal dispute involving US president Donald Trump and his own government has been resolved with the US administration announcing on Monday the creation of a $1.76 billion fund tied to claims of political “weaponization,” as per a report.

Trump IRS Case Explained: What Led to the Tax Return Leak Lawsuit

The settlement brings an end to an “unprecedented” lawsuit filed by Trump against the Internal Revenue Service. In the case, Trump, along with Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and the Trump Organization, argued that the IRS did not do enough to prevent a former contractor from leaking his tax returns to the media during his first term, as per a Reuters report. Trump had initially sought $10 billion in damages.

What Is the Trump IRS Tax Leak Settlement and Political “Weaponization” Claims

As part of the agreement, Trump will not receive any financial payment, but he will be issued an apology. Instead, the Justice Department will set up a fund overseen by Trump allies. The pool will be used to process claims from individuals who say they were affected by “weaponization or lawfare” by the US government.

The Justice Department said there are no partisan requirements for filing claims. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the purpose is to "make right the wrongs that were previously done while ensuring this never happens again,” as quoted by Reuters. Blanche, who previously served as Trump’s defense attorney in three criminal cases, will appoint four of the five members of the commission responsible for reviewing claims.

$1.76 Billion Fund Created After Trump IRS Tax Dispute Resolution

The decision has faced criticism from Democratic lawmakers, with Representative Jamie Raskin calling it an attempt to divert taxpayer money into what he described as a "racket designed to take $1.7 billion of taxpayer dollars out of the Treasury and pour it into a huge slush fund," as quoted by Reuters.

The settlement also includes Trump dropping additional claims related to the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago in 2022 and investigations into his 2016 campaign and Russia.
