Donald Trump's expansion plans for luxury Turnberry golf course rejected

Plans for a major expansion of Donald Trump’s flagship Scottish golf resort with new housing and luxury villas have been rejected.

The Trump Organisation wanted to create an upmarket residential area surrounding Turnberry.

But the local council vetoed the plans – threatening efforts by the US president’s company to stem the haemorrhaging of millions from the resort.

Turnberry, in Ayrshire, has run up four consecutive years of losses totalling nearly £33million under Trump . It relies on £107million in interest-free loans provided by US president.

South Ayrshire Council planners rejected the Trump Organisation’s request to reclassify vast tracts of farmland along the Firth of Clyde coastline for housing.

The council’s development plan says: “We will not generally allow development which we consider may negatively affect the status of Turnberry and Royal Troon as venues for the Open Championship.”

The plans were assessed against environmental and planning criteria, the council said.
