Donald Trump's dream of Nigel Farage as UK's ambassador to USA dashed

Donald Trump's dream of having Nigel Farage as the UK's ambassador to USA has been dashed.

The US President previously said he would like to see the Brexit Party leader take on the top job of being the UK's top man in Washington.

This afternoon No10 confirmed that they had begun the process of recruiting a new Ambassador to America.

But in a blow to Mr Trump's hopes they confirmed that the replacement to Sir Kim Darroch would come from inside the Civil Service.

In 2016 Donald Trump tweeted: "Many people would like to see @Nigel_Farage represent Great Britain as their Ambassador to the United States. He would do a great job!"

Sir Kim Darroch stood down from the role in July (PA)

Nigel Farage previously said he wouldn't be the right man for the job but claimed “could be very useful”.

The Prime Minister's spokesman said: "The Foreign Office has this afternoon begun the process of recruiting the UK’s ambassador to the United States.

"Ministers believe that the right candidate will be a successful leader with proven experience of working for Government on the broad range of issues that our bilateral relationship with the US covers, and therefore can be found from within the civil service.”

Sir Kim resigned as UK ambassador to the US, in July last year over a row  about leaked emails critical of President Trump's administration.

Then Tory leadership candidate Boris Johnson faced strong criticism for failing to fully support him.

President Trump said  that the US would not deal with Sir Kim after the leak and branded him a "very stupid guy".

Resigning Sir Kim said: "The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like."
