Donald Trump’s fiscal budget proposal for 2018 would eliminate a total of 66 federal programmes.
The move would save $26.7 billion (£20.6 billion) and would see the likes of community learning centres and low income home energy assistance scrapped.
Some of the schemes are likely to receive funding for 2018 as part of the plan to phase them out.
The White House is hoping to slash federal spending by $3.6 trillion (£2.8 trillion) over the next decade with defence being one of the few areas set for increased funding.
An additional $25 billion (£19 billion) for defence has been allocated for the next fiscal year, following a similar increase in the current budget, according to US broadcaster CNBC.
