Donald Trump's 2020 campaign 'targeted by Iran-linked Hackers'

Iran has reportedly tried and failed to hack into Donald Trump's 2020 election campaign.

It comes after Microsoft revealed a series of attacks by group called Phosphorous against a "US Presidential campaign".

The tech giant said they belive the attacks "originated from Iran and are linked to the Iranian government".

Reuters reported that the action "attempted to break into President Donald Trump's re-election campaign".

The Trump campaign's Director of Communications Tim Murtaugh said: "We have no indication that any of our campaign infrastructure was targeted."

Over a 30-day period between August and September more than 240 attacks were made against email addresses.

According to Microsoft, the targets targets included "A US presidential campaign, current and former US government officials, journalists covering global politics and prominent Iranians living outside Iran".

But this was not high tech cyber warfare according to Microsoft, and instead used personal information to try and get into private accounts.

This included "researching their targets" and then using the information they found to reset passwords and answer the privacy questions.

The blog post said: "[The attacks] attempted to use a significant amount of personal information both to identify the accounts belonging to their intended targets and in a few cases to attempt attacks.

"This effort suggests Phosphorus is highly motivated and willing to invest significant time and resources engaging in research and other means of information gathering.

"Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center (MSTIC) works every day to track threat groups including Phosphorus so we can notify customers when they face threats or compromises and so that we can build our products to better defend against these threats."
