Donald Trump phones and leaves voicemail for supporter he bodyshamed during rally

Donald Trump phoned and left a voicemail for a supporter who he bodyshamed during a rally after mistaking him for a protester.

The US President told the man, named later as Frank Dawson, that he had a "serious weight problem" and should “go home and start exercising”.

Believing Mr Dawson was a protester interrupting his speech, he told the audience during an address in New Hampshire on Thursday: “That guy has a serious weight problem. Go home and start exercising. That guy is worse than I am.

"He’ll go back to his home and his mom will say, ‘What did you just do?’”

He added: "Get him out of here please. Got a bigger problem than I do. Got a bigger problem than all of us."

Mr Dawson, who was sitting high up in the arena in the US city of Manchester, was escorted out.

Mr Trump continued with his speech and went on to tell the crowds that his campaign was "built on love".

It later emerged that Mr Dawson was a Trump supporter and was not protesting against the president.

He claimed that he was trying to tell fellow supporters to quieten down while Mr Trump was speaking.

He said afterwards: "Everything's good. I love the guy. He's the best thing that ever happened to this country."

A senior White House official said the president called the supporter about the moment and left a voicemail.

Mr Dawson confirmed to ABC news Trump had called him and thanked him for his support and for coming to the rally.

Asked if the president apologised, he replied, "No, why would he apologise?"
