Donald Trump mocked for Notre Dame fire idea that could have destroyed cathedral

Donald Trump has been mocked for dishing out advice on putting out the Notre Dame fire - because his suggestion could have completely destroyed the historic cathedral.

The US President was one of the first world leaders to respond to the ongoing drama as firefighters battled the blaze.

But urging authorities to act quickly, he suggested using aerial tankers - often used to put out forest fires.

This could have been a huge error, as many quickly pointed out, as the weight of the water may have crushed the remaining structure.

Trump wrote on Twitter : "So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!"

Commentators were quick to point out the perils of such a tactic.

French news site Le Monde explains: “A Canadair projects about 6 tonnes of water at high speed to the ground: the danger is significant of hurting one or more people around the building - which is why Canadair interventions are so infrequent in urban and peri-urban areas.

“Such an intervention could also significantly destroy the little remaining structure of the cathedral."

French civic security services have reiterated that dropping water on the burning cathedral to put out the fire isn’t an option.

Writing on Twitter, the service wrote: “Hundreds of firemen of the Paris Fire Brigade are doing everything they can to bring the terrible  #NotreDame  fire under control.

“All means are being used, except for water-bombing aircrafts which, if used, could lead to the collapse of the entire structure of the cathedral.”

Firefighters were able to save the building from complete destruction.

Star Trek actor George Takei posted: "Literally no one asked you" to the US President.

And others poked fun at Trump, with Charlotte Clymer posting: "Watching Donald Trump firesplain, via tweet, to heartbroken Parisians on how to help Notre Dame is a new level of surreal that is entirely unwelcome."
