Donald Trump has never been a huge supporter of immigrants, and he certainly does not hold Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in high regard. However, both topics have been frequently mentioned by Trump recently.
The recent shooting of National Guard members by an Afghan individual, who is suspected to be the perpetrator, resulted in the death of one officer and left another critically injured. This incident allowed Donald Trump and the Republican Party to further spread their negative views and convince the public that allowing immigrants into America will only lead to harm. They didn’t need to be subtle this time; they openly attacked immigrants, declaring on every news channel and social media platform that they would be halting immigration from all countries for the time being. It almost seemed like they had been waiting for the right moment to act and seized the first chance they got. I’m sure many of you would agree.
For some strange reason, Donald Trump seems to be fixated on the Somali immigrant population in the United States at present, particularly those living in Minnesota. In recent days, he has made several derogatory remarks about the Somali immigrant community in Minnesota, using terms like “garbage” and others. He has also claimed that Somalis have taken “billions of dollars” from the United States without contributing anything to its economy. At one event, he even seemed to deny the existence of Somalia, expressing confusion about it. On another occasion, he stated that Somalia “stinks” and that people there “just run around killing each other.” He also urged them to return to their homeland instead of crowding US cities and suggested they should fix Somalia’s issues so they could live there.
In addition to badmouthing the Somali population, in the last couple of days, Donald Trump has also lashed out at Tim Walz, the Governor of Minnesota, which houses one of the largest Somali populations in the United States. Trump has called Walz a “crooked governor” and a “grossly incompetent man.” He has also accused Walz of turning Minnesota into a “hub of fraudulent money laundering activity.” In a Truth Social post, Trump insulted Walz in an even worse manner and used the R-word to describe him. When asked to confirm if he meant it, Trump doubled down on his comments by replying in the affirmative and stating that he believes something is wrong with Walz. More recently, during an Oval Office press interaction, Trump said that the Somalis had “destroyed” Minnesota under an “incompetent governor” (referring to Tim Walz) and had turned it into a “hellhole.” He also expressed a wish to get the Somalis out of the US, as they had “destroyed” the country.
Many individuals had a lot to say about Trump’s hateful rhetoric regarding the Somalis and Tim Walz, particularly those on X (formerly Twitter). One person wrote:
