Donald Trump investigated over potential Turnberry and Prestwick Airport conflict of interest

Donald Trump is being investigated over a potential conflict of interest involving his Turnberry resort and Prestwick Airport.

The US Congress has launched a probe into whether increasing military expenditure at the airport and allegations of cut-price deals at Trump’s Ayrshire golf resort offered to visiting US service personnel is a violation of the American constitution.

Chairman of the Congress oversight committee Elijah Cummings had written to then-acting Secretary of Defence Patrick Shanahan to raise “serious conflict of interest concerns” about Trump making money from military trips to Scotland.

The letter, from June, reveals concerns that US military spending at Prestwick – the closest airport to Trump’s resort – appears to have “increased substantially since the election”.

The Scottish Government said the airport operated at arm’s length from the Government and added: “Glasgow Prestwick Airport has handled military and private flights since the 1930s and it remains an important part of the airport’s business”.
