Donald Trump in L.A.; immigration hot topic

July 10--A coalition for immigrant rights plans to hold a protest rally outside a luxury hotel in Brentwood where Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is scheduled to speak Friday.

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles Action Fund plans to rally around 4:30 p.m. outside of the Luxe Sunset Boulevard hotel, where Trump will speak to the Friends of Abe, a group of entertainment industry conservatives.

The rally is in response to Trump's controversial comments about Mexican immigrants.

Trump said, "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending the best .... They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists, and some, I assume, are good people."

His remarks set off a wave of protests and caused numerous corporations, including NBC, to cut ties with him.

The coalition says it plans to carry Donald Trump pi񡴡s that will be filled with trash to "represent the type of language the candidate has been spewing," CHIRLA officials said.

"There is no way a candidate for the highest elected office in the land can utter the type of hateful language that Trump is known for and expect to win the Latino/immigrant vote," Diana Colin, CHIRLA action funds program director, said in a statement. "And everyone knows the road to the White House is paved with Latino/immigrant votes. Mr. Trump should do the math."

The dinner for Trump, which was scheduled before he made the controversial remarks, is a private event and will follow his visit with Jamiel Shaw, father of Jamiel Shaw II, a high school football standout who was shot and killed in Arlington Heights in 2008 by a gang member who was living in the country illegally.

Trump will meet with Jamiel Shaw at a Beverly Hills hotel.
